Application for Marriage

We are delighted that you want to marry here. Christian marriage is both a time of joyful celebration and also a deep, spiritual commitment between two people, their families and communities. We hope to work with you to create a unique celebration of God’s love for your marriage, and to guide you through the law as it relates to getting married in the Church of England. Such law supports married relationships in the wider community and protects those committing themselves to one another. If it is not possible for us to marry you, we will try to offer advice as to other options open to you. Either way, be assured of a warm welcome at all our churches and feel free to contact us if we can help in any way.

The Parish of Walthamstow is part of The Church of England and a team of churches comprising of St Luke’s, St Gabriel’s, and St Mary’s. It is possible to be married in either of our church buildings (St Mary's or St Gabriel's), provided you fulfil the requirements of residency or qualifying connection with the parish. The staff who conduct weddings are:

Rev Vanessa Conant, Rev Andrew Stewart (St Gabriel's), Rev Alan Moss, Rev Tim Scott and Rev Jacintha Danaswamy

If you live in the Church of England parish of Walthamstow your application is fairly straightforward. If you are not resident, you will need to show a suitable ‘Qualifying Connection’ with the church and parish. This form will help you understand and demonstrate that. If either you or your fiancé(e) is divorced or not a UK national please make sure you clearly show that. Divorce or non-UK Citizenship may not prevent you from being married here, but it is very important we know as soon as possible as there are some additional steps we need to follow.

We have a legal duty to be satisfied that you can lawfully marry in the parish before the marriage can take place or a firm date and time can be fixed for it.

We look forward to receiving your application. Please be assured the information on this form is confidential between you and the staff of The Parish of Walthamstow.

Please begin by reading the following notes:

If you require this form in large print, if English is not your first language, or would like any assistance to complete it please contact the Parish Office on 020 8520 1430.

Before completing the form, you may well find it helpful to read the material on the Church of England Marriage Measure 2008 on the Church of England web site at

http://www.cofe.anglican.org/lifeevents/weddings/

including the House of Bishops’ guidance on the Measure.

If either of you has been married previously, and your former husband or wife is still alive; Or either of you is not a UK national; alert the Minister to that as soon as possible, even before submitting the completed form, so that the special issues which arise can be considered without delay.

When the Minister has considered the completed form, it is possible that the Minister may still need to ask you for some further documents or other information, or may need to ask someone holding an official position in the parish for further information in support of your connection with the parish. If any special issue arises in your case it is also possible that the Minister may need to ask for advice on it from the diocesan legal adviser. However, if any of these becomes necessary, the Minister will see that you are kept fully informed.
